Il tabarro (The Cloak) is an opera in one act by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Giuseppe Adami, based on Didier Gold’s play La houppelande. It is the first of the trio of operas known as “Il trittico”.
This opera deals with the uneasy theme of death, but also love, grief and the struggle for survival. While designing the stage, I focused on the pervasive darkness, both the physical lack of light and the metaphorical darkness in the hearts of the characters. The main element of the stage design is a semi-circular wall created from openable metal segments that imitates a rusted shipwreck.
In my conception there is no room for hope. From the very beginning the viewer senses in the air the catastrophe that inevitably approaches the characters.

Costume design
The costume design for this opera is consistent with the stage design. The characters are dressed in poor, disheveled clothing. Each one of them has been tragically scarred by fate. They all try to break out of the ever-present misery and suffering.
